It would be appreciated if you would inform me of the way in which you discovered this site, for example, the souvenir programme at a Dome organ concert, or through an organ orientated website, using the search engine, etc. Please do this by clicking in the box below. I am also very interested in your comments on the site and if you have any personal reminiscences regarding the Dome organ, Douglas Reeve etc. I have had many encouraging e-mails so far. and JOHN MANN Brighton's very own popular organist-entertainer John Mann made his first public broadcast in 1968. Since then he has gained an international reputation as an eminent theatre organist and entertainer, effortlessly invoking the heyday of variety Music Hall and light entertainment. His theatre organ idol was the legendary Douglas Reeve, who made the Dome organ his very own, and we heard his influences in John's performance. which was essentially a "Tribute to Douglas Reeve".
CLICK ANYWHERE ON THE ABOVE PICTURE OF DOUGLAS REEVE TO HEAR HIM PLAYING HIS SIGNATURE TUNE "PACK UP YOUR TROUBLES" The instrument became justifiably famous through the many broadcasts by Douglas in the heyday of the BBC Light Programme's 10 am theatre organ programmes. His twice-weekly summer series of "Pack up Your Troubles" organ concerts attracted capacity audiences, and many were turned away at the "Last Night", such was his popularity. He also inaugurated just after the 2nd World War the weekly "Tuesday at the Dome" variety shows (1/- and 1/6d seats) in which he was the top billed artiste at practically every performance. These shows were given an entry in the GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS as the longest running seaside variety show in the world. He is fondly missed and he would be proud of the re-vamped Dome and the fact that the organ which he made famous is once again going to be an asset not only to the Dome, but also to the city of Brighton and Hove. |
